Kaoru Aoyama is a professor at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University. She holds a PhD in sociology and specializes in gender/sexuality studies, gendered labor and crossborder migration. She is currently leading two corroborative pieces of research both as the PI: on migrant sex work and trafficking in the sex industry in nine countries in Europe and Asia; and challenging the notion of dichotomous sex/gender/sexuality from Asian perspectives, which is a successor project of this book.

Her publications in English include Thai Migrant Sex Workers from Modernisation to Globalisation, Palgrave/Macmillan, 2009; Asian Women and Intimate Work, Brill Academic Publication, 2013, edited, with Emiko Ochiai (winner of the 2014 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award); and ‘Researchers, Gatekeepers and Participatory Action Research in Japan’s Sex Industry,’ in Susan Dewey, Isabel Crowhurst and Chimaraoke Izugbara eds., International Handbook of Sex Industry Research: New Directions and Perspectives,
Routledge, 2018.
