Book Review on Our Publication The Stripper Goddess of Japan
We are pleased to announce that our publication, The Stripper Goddess of Japan, written by Tsurumi Shunsuke and translated by Aoyama Tomoko & Penny Bailey (2023), has been featured in a thoughtful and insightful review in the academic journal Informit.
The review by Laura Marshall of the University of Sydney offers a nuanced and appreciative reading of the work, highlighting its originality, intellectual depth, and unique contribution to Japanese cultural and intellectual history.
Marshall describes the book as:
“an unconventional cultural and intellectual history of Japan that places its women centre stage.”
Marshall praises Tsurumi’s scholarship, observing:
“the text's display of Tsurumi's encyclopaedic and eclectic intellect is precisely what constitutes its greatest appeal.”
She also offers high praise for the translation and annotations by Aoyama and Bailey, acknowledging their careful and scholarly approach to making Tsurumi's work accessible to English-speaking readers.
We are honored to see The Stripper Goddess of Japan recognized in this way and grateful for the generous and detailed attention it has received.
